What it measures

It shares its name with the open-competition test and is not the same: the number of minutes changes and the internal workings of the house come in, not just the Union in general. It is sat in language 2, among English, French and German.

What the questions look like

The Union, and the house from the inside

There are still institutions, treaties and policies, as in the open EK. But here you are also asked about what an official uses at work: the Staff Regulations, internal procedures, the rights and duties of staff.

It is the part that someone with years inside answers without studying and that someone from outside cannot improvise.

Where people lose it

  • Preparing the open-competition EK and assuming it covers this. Neither the minutes nor the scope are the same.
  • Leaving out the Staff Regulations. It is the most specific part of this test and the least present in generic material.
  • Assuming you sit it in your own language. It is in language 2, and the range is narrower than in the open competitions.
  • Trusting service habit. How it is done in your directorate-general is not always what the rule says.

How you practise here

Here you sit it on the format of the competition notice — its questions and its minutes — not on the open-competition one.
